This follow-up finds The Allah-Las still solidly in the '60s psych–influenced mode that served them so well last time around. But the band have begun to expand their palette a bit beyond the basic guitars-and-drums template of their debut, proving that they're not about to paint themselves into an aesthetic corner. While there are still jangling guitars aplenty and a reigning musical vision defined by the sounds that ruled the West Coast between 1965 and 1967—an aesthetic the band employs expertly—there's also the lambent instrumental "Yemeni Jade," colored by mellow vibraphone lines. And while surf-rock influences aren't absent from the album, the title track is in fact a tenderly twinkling, bossa nova–inflected tune. "Better Than Mine" includes some swooping pedal steel guitar, introducing a bit of a Buffalo Springfield/Flying Burrito Brothers country-rock feel. There are still plenty of moody, melodic psych-pop pleasures to be found on Worship the Sun, offset by textures that take the band's sound a step further.
