iTunes Editors’ Notes

This follow-up finds The Allah-Las still solidly in the '60s psych–influenced mode that served them so well last time around. But the band have begun to expand their palette a bit beyond the basic guitars-and-drums template of their debut, proving that they're not about to paint themselves into an aesthetic corner. While there are still jangling guitars aplenty and a reigning musical vision defined by the sounds that ruled the West Coast between 1965 and 1967—an aesthetic the band employs expertly—there's also the lambent instrumental "Yemeni Jade," colored by mellow vibraphone lines. And while surf-rock influences aren't absent from the album, the title track is in fact a tenderly twinkling, bossa nova–inflected tune. "Better Than Mine" includes some swooping pedal steel guitar, introducing a bit of a Buffalo Springfield/Flying Burrito Brothers country-rock feel. There are still plenty of moody, melodic psych-pop pleasures to be found on Worship the Sun, offset by textures that take the band's sound a step further.

Customer Reviews

Sandy Songs for Sun-soaked Safaris

A superb, well-seasoned sophomore album by the Allah-las, the kings of the surf kin. 'Worship the Sun' brings the endless summer into your home and jams your earbuds chock-full of freshly crafted safari surf jams. Wake up with a sandy pillow and groove to a refined Allah-las, a band that continues to progress in all the right ways. Favorite songs: Better Than Mine, Ferus Gallery, Artifact, and Every Girl.

Kings of Catchy

Every Girl and Had It All have that surfy, beachy, low-fi sound from the first album. This new album needs those songs, ones that remind us of why we loved the first album. Now, 501-415 is COMPLETELY different. Sounds like a whole new band, but I love it. I'm really excited about this new album.

Allah-Las

Love this band, this album follows perfectly in the first album's footsteps and improves on the formula.

Biography

Formed: 2008 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Los Angeles-based garage rock revivalist quartet Allah-Las are comprised of lead vocalist/guitarist Miles Michaud, lead guitarist/vocalist Pedrum Siadatian, bassist/vocalist Spencer Dunham, and drummer/vocalist Matthew Correia. Three of the four bandmembers were working in the L.A. branch of the legendary record store Amoeba when the group formed in 2008, and they must have spent a great deal of time researching the garage and psychedelic sounds of the '60s while propping up the counter. Their sound...
