January 1947, post-war Germany is covered under thick blanket of ice and snow. Among the ruins, the people fight for their lives and what is left of it. Food is scarce. The few available goods are traded on the black market. A murder happens and the head of the British military police, Richard Davies, is assigned to solve the case. The only witness is a 10 year old boy, who is too afraid to speak. Friederike Matthée, part of the newly formed female police force, is called for help. Her soft and tender nature, which otherwise often gets in the way of her police work, proves to be her special skill and enables her to bond with the young witness. Both have more in common than first expected. Traumatised by her own flight during the war, being confronted with the young boys distress Friederike’s limits are tested more than once.
In a time in which it is hard to determine who is friend and who is foe, Friederike Matthée and Richard Davies have to forge unusual alliances to solve a murder that uncovers memories of the past that everyone is ready to revisit.

Friederike Matthée von der Weiblichen Polizei in Köln wird Richard zur Seite gestellt. Sie kommt, wie der Junge, aus Ostpreußen und findet einen Zugang zu seiner verletzten Seele. Doch die Erinnerungen an die schrecklichen Erlebnisse während der Flucht sind noch so frisch, dass Friederike an ihrer Kraft zweifelt. Und Richard Davies muss mit Menschen zusammenarbeiten, die schwere Schuld auf sich geladen haben.
Beate Sauer studied Theology, Philosophy and Journalism before she realized that her heart really beats for writing fictional stories. With her historical novels she already enthralled a wide readership. Having switched genres Echo of the Dead is her first crime novel.
