Roman
Opoe - the grandmother – remains a stranger to everyone in her family until the end. The grandson, Donat, shares a special bond with the lonely and eccentric woman. After her death, he travels to the places where she lived - from Holland and to Switzerland. He is trying to give her silence a voice. He wants to find out who she really was and how her life still affects his today. Both lives intertwine in a struggle for identity and a place in society. Donat Blum’s debut novel is the tale of a young man trying to make sense of his own life through that of his recently deceased grandmother. In short and forceful vignettes, he has created an atmospheric and engaging read. With this exploration of twentieth-century European history through the narrative perspective of a gay man in a polyamorous relationship, Donat Blum offers a refreshingly original and contemporary take on the existential question of belonging and the idea that specters of the past live on from one generation to the next.
Donat Blum has directed a film festival, worked as a dishwasher and director and studied at the Swiss and German Literature Institutes. He has published in numerous journals, organized literary workshops and events. He is the editor-in-chief of the literary magazine Glitter.
