Editors’ Notes

23 is Blonde Redhead’s seventh full length and their second since the release of The Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons, the album that saw them emerging from the fractured, noise oriented demi-monde of New York avant-rock, and into the world of lushly progressive, sweetly off-kilter indie-pop. 23 finds Blonde Redhead collaborating with alterna-rock super producer Alan Moulder who reins in their more abrasive tendencies with decidedly mixed results. Though the icy, austerely beautiful textures of “Publisher” are as satisfying as anything the band's ever produced, the grandiose electro of “Spring and By Summer Fall” comes off as awkward and forced. Ultimately though Amedo Pace’s skewed guitar playing and Kazu Mikano’s seductively ethereal vocals prove to be 23’s saving graces. Whenever things become too polished, Mikano emerges with her soothingly indecipherable croon, or Pace intervenes with a startlingly inventive guitar line to recapture the otherworldly beauty that Blonde Redhead are so justly admired for.

Customer Reviews

23 - smoother, refined, delicious

blonde redhead's haunting, melodic, sophistication continues with 23. a new level of refinement especially in vocals. try dr. strangelove, 23, and silently if you want to get a good sense of what you are in for. for the fan an essential. for the new explorer it's worth the investment.

Smile

I was in New York City last week and heard a couple tracks off an advance copy of this album by accident while in Kim's Video. It intrigued me enough to put in a pre-order on iTunes. Now I've listened to the entire album and have nothing but good things to say. Each track is a delight. Every song, particularly the choruses will make you smile. Musically it's nothing short of brilliant. The production is lush and ethereal. Synths, beats, and vocals are all combined to a near divine personification of quality. Album highlights are "Dr. Strangeluv, Silently, and Publisher. Comparisons to other artists don't do this band justice. Suffice it to say you'll have to listen for yourself. You won't be disappointed. Having not heard their previous albums, I can't say how it measures up. All I know is that this album is astounding, brilliant, and nothing short of a post-modern masterpiece. Buy it without hesitation.

Interesting

This is a good release after Misery is a Butterfly. Its a bit lighter on the beats compared to the previous album. But don't be fooled the same sark themes and ambient mood are still present her a definite must buy

Moving from Sonic Youth-like art punk to eclectic pop over the course of their decades-long career, Blonde Redhead remained one of indie rock's most creative acts. The band formed in 1993 after Japanese art students Kazu Makino and Maki Takahashi randomly met Italian twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace at an Italian restaurant in New York. (The name was taken from a song by the '80s no wave band DNA.) With Makino and Amedeo on guitars and vocals, Simone on drums, and Takahashi on bass, the band's...
