iTunes Editors’ Notes

"Though it's accepted wisdom that Tom Waits altered his sound and approach with a switch to Island Records in 1983, forsaking traditional musical arrangements for a junkyard assemblage of rag-tag instruments and an unrestrained bellow that could shake the heavens, the truth is more that he had been sliding off the piano bench for several years prior. The barroom prophet of his earliest records had been giving away to a blues and rhythm-based raconteur for some time. Heartattack and Vine is part of this transition, with many tracks sounding as if they were recorded in a blues club after closing time. Waits still ratchets up the sentimentality (""Jersey Girl,"" which Bruce Springsteen popularized) and the orchestrated pathos (""Saving All My Love for You,"" ""On the Nickel,"" ""Ruby's Arms"") alongside the raw ferocity (""Heartattack and Vine,"" ""Downtown"") for which he'd become known in the following decade. His voice isn't yet at its strangulated extreme, but it sounds positively scarred with sorrow."

Customer Reviews

Tom Waits for No ONE!

Tom Waits is F***** awesome!

Tom Waits is the Best.

This a beautiful album. His husky, smoky voice is perfect. Love, love him.

Never a let down in sight

This album like all the rest of Tom Waits' Albums is simply a magnificent album. Somehow managing to endlessly endear the audience with hismixture of deeply sentimental melodies and sometimes raucous tunes he never fails to produce some of the best music Ive ever experienced. Put on a nice set of audiophile headphones(grados SR-3225is in my case) and melt into the world of Tom Waits with this or any album. This album is spectacular like all the rest.

In the 1970s, Tom Waits combined a lyrical focus on desperate, low-life characters with a persona that seemed to embody the same lifestyle, which he sang about in a raspy, gravelly voice. From the '80s on, his work became increasingly theatrical as he moved into acting and composing. Growing up in Southern California, Waits attracted the attention of manager Herb Cohen, who also handled Frank Zappa, and was signed by him at the beginning of the 1970s, resulting in the material later released as The...
