iTunes Editors’ Notes

"Those who know Tom Waits from his '80s work onwards may find it hard to believe that he began as an acoustic-based, folk-tinged singer-songwriter. But the proof is on his captivating 1973 debut album, Closing Time. Waits fills his first recording with tender evocations of lonesome barflies and ragged Romeos. His voice — a clearer if more callow instrument than it would become in later years — conveys a real compassion for the denizens of his songs. His tunes are steeped in nostalgia, with a touch of the blues and a hint of country. ""Ol' 55"" is at once upbeat and bittersweet, while ""Ice Cream Man"" has an R&B-ish flavor, and ""Martha"" is a slice of old-fashioned balladry. ""I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You"" reveals Waits as a master storyteller from the beginning. Closing Time is a heartfelt and quietly compelling opening statement from one of music's most unmistakable voices."

Customer Reviews

One of the Greatest Underrated albums of all time.

If you've found your way to this album you should buy it.

One of the most overwhelmingly romantic albums ever made...a masterpiece

A wonderful treasure trove of jazzy, bluesy, early Waits that rank among his very finest. The melodic tales of late night longing that Waits brings forth from his piano and vocals will break your heart in the most wonderful possible way. The album's stripped down approach of jazz bass-drums-piano only assures it's timelessness. Ol' 55, I Hope I Don't Fall in Love With You, Rosie, Midnight Lullaby, and (especially) Martha and Grapefruit Moon conjure such a sense of deep romantic longing and catharsis. Even at this early stage Waits was a master songwriter...and this gorgeous debut is his first masterwork.

Simply Amazing!

There may albums out there as good as Closing Time, but nothing is better.

In the 1970s, Tom Waits combined a lyrical focus on desperate, low-life characters with a persona that seemed to embody the same lifestyle, which he sang about in a raspy, gravelly voice. From the '80s on, his work became increasingly theatrical as he moved into acting and composing. Growing up in Southern California, Waits attracted the attention of manager Herb Cohen, who also handled Frank Zappa, and was signed by him at the beginning of the 1970s, resulting in the material later released as The...
