iTunes Editors’ Notes

"Tom Waits has always been a character who enjoys immersing himself in the lives of the characters he creates. This has been true throughout his long career, no matter his chosen approach. The Heart of Saturday Night, Waits' second studio album, presents a piano-based twenty-something singer-songwriter who yearns for the soul and insight of someone many decades older. He probably wishes he could've recorded in a bar; the lumbering piano sway of ""San Diego Serenade"" has a boozer's long night in its rearview. The horn honk at the onset of the title track adds a cinematic intention to Waits' nostalgic desires, and the song itself feels like a slow cruise through an inviting city neighborhood. Several cuts — ""Diamonds On My Windshield,"" ""The Ghosts of Saturday Night""— are spoken word beatnik jazz riffs. Yet, for all the boozy sentimentality, Waits is a commanding performer and the strong material throughout makes for an inviting trip to a world long past."

The good, the bad & the ugly

I've listened to these albums for 35 years. They heal when I hurt, they play with me when I'm up, they have carried me through life. I've had vinyl, cd's and now itunes. I've stopped smokin', drinkin' & fightin' but I haven't stopped lovin' ole Tom. Peace

One of the best records ever made! Definite buy for a Waits fan!!!

I remember buying this album years ago when I heard "Please Call Me Baby" and just falling in love with it. Everything on this record is fantastic! It is hands down in my top 5 favorite albums! I played thls CD soooo much that I would always end up ruining it or leaving it in someone elses car. It's one of verrry few CD's I've bought more then once! I think I've purchased this albut over 3 times at least! GO BUY THIS ALBUM! DONT THINK JUST DO!!

Great album!

I discovered Tom Waits and this album in a restaurant juke box. It was a saturday night so I played a song called "The Ghosts of Saturday Night" and was drawn to it's lyrics and how well they meshed with the atmosphere of the restaurant. I later found out that Tom actually worked at that very restaurant in the 1960s when he was a teen. In fact the subtitle for the song is ( after hours at Napoleons Pizza house, the same place I was eating. I have been a huge fan ever since.

No wonder the song captured the atmosphere so well. Haha

In the 1970s, Tom Waits combined a lyrical focus on desperate, low-life characters with a persona that seemed to embody the same lifestyle, which he sang about in a raspy, gravelly voice. From the '80s on, his work became increasingly theatrical as he moved into acting and composing. Growing up in Southern California, Waits attracted the attention of manager Herb Cohen, who also handled Frank Zappa, and was signed by him at the beginning of the 1970s, resulting in the material later released as The...
