Album Review

James' most consistent work, I Care Because You Do fuses his earlier hardcore techno days with the smooth rhythm and atmosphere of his ambient work, often on the same song. "Ventolin" is one of the harshest singles ever recorded; the orchestrated closer "Next Heap With" is the highlight of the album.

maybe i'm weird but has anyone else noticed that 4 of the song titles are just aphex twin, or the aphew twin scrambled? and going on that logic, are all the titles this way.... so far i've come up with: 1. acrid avid jam shred = herr davids acid jam 2. the waxen pith = the aphex twin 3. wax the nip = aphex twin 4. icct hedral = cradle itch 5. ventolin = violent n 6. come on you slags! = well i didn't get one for this 7. start as you mean to go on = same thing here 8. wet tip hen ax = aphex twin (he does this alot i think) 9. mookid = im do ok 10. alberto balsam = maybe this one's a tribute to vo5 11. cow cud is a twin = and again, no idea 12. next heap with = the aphex twin maybe i'm reading to far into it... but hell, it's fun

Classic Aphex Twin

If you aren't familiar w/Aphex Twin, then "I Care Because You Do" is a good record to start with. It has a good mixture of mellow and fast rhythms. It's almost impossible to distinguish one Aphex Twin record from the next, but that is not to say they AT lacks creativity. The music is all-over-the-board -- some songs contain a lot of experimental use of ambience and/or drum machines -- often times sticking to the same underlying rhythm and/or melody with the use of every imaginable sound, from screams to strings. A++ (Aphex Twin is not associated with Aphex Systems Ltd.)

Decent, but not the best.

It was around this album when Richard D. James moved from the typical analogue sound to a more digital sound of sequencers, slightly repetitive tracks, and whatnot. While his talent and vision shine through this album, especially in tracks such as Alberto Balsalm, the entire album as a whole has a slightly different sound than the previous albums released. Granted, Aphex Twin is the sort of person to keep his sounds different in each album. However, this time, it didn't really stick with me.

Exploring the experimental possibilities inherent in acid and ambience, the two major influences on home-listening techno during the late '80s, Richard D. James' recordings as Aphex Twin brought him more critical praise than any other electronic artist. Though his first major single, "Didgeridoo," was a piece of acid thrash designed to tire dancers during his DJ sets, ambient stylists and critics later took him under their wing for Selected Ambient Works 85-92, a sublime touchstone in the field of...
