iTunes Editors’ Notes

Haley Bonar captures a joyous pop sound on the exquisite “Woke Up in My Future,” greatly expanding the indie singer/songwriter’s spartan folk sound. Perhaps it was the experience of working in three recording studios—Devils Workshop, April Base, and Dave Grohl’s personal studio in LA 606—that encouraged Bonar to treat these sessions like she’s reinventing her career. But whatever’s gotten into this Canadian-born, South Dakota–raised, and St. Paul, Minn.–based singer/songwriter is all for the good. Despite its title, “Kill the Fun” broadcasts as a joyous ‘80s-style indie pop number that’s still plenty existential. “No Sensitive Man” is all the evidence one needs to know that she’s worked in the music industry. Ever since she was discovered at an open mic by Alan Sparhawk of Low, Bonar has taken her career both seriously and with a casual, instinctive attitude that’s made her a fascinating character. For added fun, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon adds vocals on the creepy “From a Cage” and the acoustic “Eat for Free.”

The most underrated artist of which I know

I wondered if she could do it again... I thought Golder was her best work. After hearing this on an NPR first listen I had to get it. I imagine artists feel pressure from new albums to outdo the last, and as fans, we never know what to expect.
Well, I'm feeling a bit ashamed for doubting what this record would be. Well done, Haley!

To sum up... Easy on the ears and as a bonus, easy on the eyes.

Incredible…Breakthrough…excuse the superlatives

I've followed Haley's work since her days in Duluth, where she was serving coffee and nibbles at Amazing Grace and putting out The Size of Planets at the age of 19. her new album…quite a break in my opinion…and just letting loose and cranking it up. Her voice shines through and above the electrified rifts and strains of her new stuff, opening up from the sharp whisper that defined much of her previous work. This…is one of the best albums of the year…and warrants national attention.

One of the 20 best albums of 2014

I'm continually impressed upon re-listening. The groove and the lyrics just get deeper and more is revealed. This is an excellent accomplishment and I'm totally becoming a "fan" as I listen. Highly recommend a quick listen and then a deeper one. Especially the first 5 tracks to get into it!

Biography

Born: 1983 in Rapid City, SD

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Born near Winnipeg, raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and later based in St. Paul, MN, singer/songwriter Haley Bonar is in the same musical orbit of the dreamy Minnesotans Low. (Her debut album, The Size of Planets, was even released on Low leader Alan Sparhawk's own label, Chairkicker's Union.) However, her sparse take on folk-rock displays little of Low's narcotic gloom, and more pertinent comparisons include Mazzy Star, Shannon Wright, and Elliott Smith. Accompanying herself alternately...
