Different, But Good

As a big Mika fan, I was wondering where he would go with his third album. I wasn't too happy with The Boy Who Knew Too Much, save for a few songs. The Origin of Love, however, is completely different from all of Mika's past albums, but keeps the parts that make him so good.

1. Origin of Love- One of the best tracks on the album, with distorted vocals and a great chorus 10/10
2. Lola- Has a great retro feel and a cool beat 8/10
3. Stardust- This collaboration with Benny Bennassi was a great idea, this should be on the radio! 10/10
4. Make You Happy- This song doesn't flow that well, despite having some "Daft Punk-ish" vocals on the chorus 7/10
5. Underwater- A ballad, it's good, but nothing special 7/10
6. Overrated- An AMAZINGLY GROOVY song that will make you dance! 9/10
7. Kids- No, it's not a cover of the MGMT song. (But it's still good) 7/10
8. Love You When I'm Drunk- Some classic Mika with a horn section in the background. What more do you want? 8/10
9. Step With Me- Some serious single material, and great lyrics as well 9/10
10. Popular Song- The chorus sample's lyrics from "Wicked", and Mika raps. Totally awesome. 10/10
11. Emily- An English translation (not exactly) of Mika's French song "Elle Me Dit" just as amazing as the original version 10/10
12. Heroes- meh. It tries to be epic, but doesn't really work. 6/10
13. Celebrate- A great ending to the album, and unlike "Make You Happy", the Daft Punk influence here sounds good 9/10
14. Make You Happy (Miami Edit)- Pretty pointless, doesn't really improve on the original 6/10

Total Score: 8/10

MIKA

I've been a fan of MIKA ever since months before his first album his US stores. There had never been an artist who captured pure childish fun in music that adults could bare to be seen listening to. He was so different and it was a breath of fresh air. His second album "The Boy who knew too much" seemed like he tried to capture that fresh air in a jar and kept it for quite some time and tried to re-use it and all we ended up getting was a whiff of something that smelled familiar but lost its crispness.

This album doesn't even try to be associated with the first two (take the album art work for living proof) and that's a wonderful thing. This album doesn't sound like "Life in cartoon motion Part 3" which should make buyers very happy. While his debut album was AMAZING its been done now, and this album is truly a departure in a glorious new direction for MIKA.

I recommend the WHOLE album (much like I did with his first album which can easily be played all the way through with no stops, but if you must buy only single songs here are the standouts)

Ok…i was gonna try and do that list, but every song except "Celebrate" ended up on it. So just buy the album.

A disappoint for old school Mika fans

Anyone who know and loved Mika's first two albums needs to be warned: This is nowhere near as good as those two efforts. The original lyrics, unique lyrics and thoughtful writing which made Mika's first two albums such a joy to listen to are, sadly, replaced by unoriginal pop (and on occasion simply mediocre pop) for much of Origin of Love. There are some wonderful songs here, most notably Love You When I'm Drunk, Emily, and Stardust, but downloading only select songs rather than the whole album is the smartest way to go.
