Album Review

Bernstein leads the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in this entertaining, sophisticated and merry collection. Tracks include "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Away in a Manger," "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and "Carol of the Bells."

bernstein triumphs again...

There are a handful of teriffic tunes on this album but for me, by far, the best is 'carol of the bells'... its the version I grew up on listening to on my grandmother's record set every year and to finally have it on CD really makes the holidays even more festive each year!

One of the Best!

I have the original Christmas LP with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and New York Philharmonic. This is a great album and it's nice to have it on CD without the scratches and hiss from the LP. I will enjoy this music for a long time to come. My favorites on the album include the stirring "Joy to the World," "Once in Royal David's City," and of course, "Silent Night." The Mormon Tabernacle Choir always sings with such spirit, whether peaceful or exuberant, sacred or secular.

A must-have for your Christmas library

Sometimes you need a huge great choir singing the classic carols. This album has my favorite version of Deck the Halls as well as a very good Joy to the World and Alleluia chorus from the Messiah. PLUS you get several bits from The Nutcracker at the end, which is an extra bonus. This is the only album I have bought in full on iTunes (instead of just song by song) -- it's $9.99 very well spent. Happy Christmas!

No figure in 20th century American classical music had as prominent or controversial a career — or did more to sell classical music to the general public as something genuinely exciting, and worth getting into a sweat over — than Leonard Bernstein. For more than 30 years, from his assumption of the post of Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in 1958 until the final concerts that he conducted in obviously failing health near the end of his life in 1990, he was the most prominent...
