Das 18. poesiefestival berlin: Europa_ Fata Morgana hat vom 16. bis 24. Juni 2017 rund 170 Dichterinnen und Dichter aus 42 Ländern zu Gast. Auf ein Wort, Europa versammelt poetische Außenansichten aus 22 Nachbarländern der Europäischen Union zu einer einzigartigen, vielsprachigen Installation. Der diesjährige VERSschmuggel ermöglicht eine kurdisch-deutsche Begegnung und bei Poesie und Propaganda wird diskutiert, wie Sprache, speziell lyrische Ausdrucksformen, Macht herstellen kann.

Sjón (c) Dagur Gunnarsson 22 Dichterinnen und Dichter aus den Anrainerstaaten der Europäischen Union treffen auf dem 18. poesiefestival berlin für eine poetische Installation aufeinander; unter ihnen ist Abbas Beydoun (Libanon), ein Mitbegründer der zweiten arabischen Moderne, Monzer Masri (Syrien), der mit seiner „Gegendichtung“ jenseits von formalen und inhaltlichen Erwartungen Debatten auslöst, und Sjón (Island), der für seine Texte für Björk in Lars von Triers „Dancer in the Dark“ bekannt ist. Wie zeigt sich derzeit die europäische Idee außerhalb der europäischen Gemeinschaft? Die Lyrikerinnen und Lyriker präsentieren ihre poetischen Antworten auf das ins Wanken geratene Europa. Ihre Texte über Realitäten, Träume und Ängste zur EU tragen sie als polyglotte Soundcollage vor. „Auf ein Wort, Europa“ findet in Kooperation mit dem Forum Berlin der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung statt und wird gefördert vom Auswärtigen Amt.

VERSschmuggel kurdisch-deutsch

Tobias Roth Erstmals kommt kurdische Dichtung in Deutschland auf eine Festivalbühne. Mit ihrer langen mündlichen Tradition gehört das Kurdische trotz aller Repression zu den ältesten Sprachen der Welt. Die reiche kurdische Geschichte und Kultur spiegelt sich in vielen Dialekten und verschiedenen Schriftsystemen wider. Der kurdisch-deutsche VERSschmuggel bietet sechs kurdischen und sechs deutschen Dichterinnen und Dichtern Freiraum für ein Experiment: Paarweise übersetzen sie sich an drei Workshop-Tagen gegenseitig. Interlinearübersetzungen der Gedichte des jeweils anderen sind ihr Ausgangsmaterial, Dolmetscher übersetzen die Arbeitsgespräche. Die Ergebnisse dieser Zusammenarbeit werden auf dem 18. poesiefestival berlin präsentiert. Es lesen Eskerê Boyîk (Armenien), Yildiz Çakar (Türkei), Kerîm Kurmanc (Iran), Fatma Savci (Türkei/Schweden), Anahîta Şêxê (Syrien) und Mueyed Teyîb (Irak) mit den deutschen Autorinnen und Autoren Mirko Bonné, Carolin Callies, Simone Kornappel, José Oliver, Ilma Rakusa und Tobias Roth. „VERSschmuggel kurdisch-deutsch“ wird gefördert vom Auswärtigen Amt und der Stiftung Preußische Seehandlung und findet statt in Kooperation mit Literature Across Frontiers/Literary Europe Live, gefördert durch das Programm Creativ Europe der Europäischen Union. Philippe Joseph-Salazar (c) Africa Publishing Was passiert heute in den analogen und digitalen Medien mit unserer Sprache? Wie wird Meinung gemacht, wie wird mit Worten politische Wirklichkeit hergestellt, und welche Rolle spielt dabei deren ästhetische Funktion, die verführt, verdammt und erfindet? Eine interdisziplinär besetzte Gesprächsrunde diskutiert auf dem 18. poesiefestival berlin das komplexe Wechselspiel von Lyrik, Rhetorik und Politik. Geformte Sprache als Mittel unterschiedlicher politischer Gruppierungen wird diskutiert, und die Dichtung im Dienste radikaler politischer Programme in der Literaturgeschichte und heute in den Blick genommen – mit aktuellen Beispielen wie den Propagandagedichten des IS und der sprachlichen Selbstinszenierung der neuen „Populisten“. Es diskutieren Paula Diehl, Politikwissenschaftlerin (Bielefeld), Ursula Krechel, Autorin (Berlin), Philippe Joseph Salazar, Philosoph und Professor für Rhetorik (Kapstadt) und Joseph Vogl, Kultur- und Literaturwissenschaftler (Berlin), moderiert von Eva Geulen, Zentrum für Literaturforschung (Berlin). „Poesie und Propaganda“ wird gefördert vom Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung Berlin.

The 18th poesiefestival berlin: Europe_ Fata Morgana is host to some 170 poets from 42 countries from 16 to 24 June 2017. A Word, Please, Europe brings together poetic perspectives from the outside from 22 countries neighbouring the European Union into a unique multi-lingual installation. This year’s VERSschmuggel/reVERSible is an encounter between Kurdish and German, and Poetry and Propaganda is a discussion of how language, specifically poetic expression, can produce power.

A Word, Please, Europe

22 poets from the countries neighbouring the European Union are coming together at the 18th poesiefestival berlin for a poetic installation. They include Abbas Beydoun (Lebanon), a co-founder of the second Arabic modernism; Monzer Masri (Syria), who is sparking debate with his ‘counter-poetry’ which goes beyond expectations of form and content; and Sjón (Iceland), who is famous for his lyrics for Björk in Lars von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark. How is the idea of Europe seen outside the European Community? The poets will be providing their poetic answers to a Europe shaken to its foundations, presenting their texts about realities, dreams and fears as a polyglot sound collage.
‘A Word, Please, Europe’ is taking place in co-operation with the Forum Berlin of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and is supported by the Auswärtiges Amt.

VERSschmuggel/reVERSible Kurdish-German

For the first time Kurdish poetry is taking the stage at a festival in Germany. Despite centuries of repression, Kurdish, with its long oral tradition, is one of the world’s oldest languages. The richness of Kurdish history and culture is reflected in the multitude of dialects and different writing systems. The Kurdish-German VERSschmuggel / reVERSible provides six Kurdish and six German poets with the freedom to experiment, translating each other in pairs in a three-day workshop, starting from gloss translations of each others‘ poems and with interpreters to enable them to communicate. The translations produced in the workshops will then be read during the 18th poesiefestival berlin.
The Kurdish poets reading are Eskerê Boyîk (Armenia), Yildiz Çakar (Turkey), Kerîm Kurmanc (Iran), Fatma Savci (Turkey and Sweden), Anahîta Şêxê (Syria) and Mueyed Teyîb (Iraq) with their German counterparts Mirko Bonné, Carolin Callies, Simone Kornappel, José Oliver, Ilma Rakusa and Tobias Roth.

Poetry and Propaganda

What is happening today to our language in analogue and digital media? How are opinions made, how is political reality created with words and what is the role played in this by its aesthetic function that seduces, damns and invents? An inter-disciplinary panel discussion at the 18th poesiefestival berlin will be exploring the complex interplay between poetry, rhetoric and politics. Formed language as an instrument of various political groupings will be discussed and poetry in the service of radical political programmes in literary history and in the present will be in the spotlight, taking present-day examples such as the propaganda poems of IS and the linguistic self-enactment of the new ‘populists’.
Taking part in the discussion will be Paula Diehl, political scientist (Bielefeld), Ursula Krechel, writer (Berlin), Philippe Joseph Salazar, philosopher and professor for rhetoric (Cape Town) and Joseph Vogl, cultural and literary scholar (Berlin), moderated by Eva Geulen of the Centre for Literary Research, Berlin.
